Dorothy Moyer Henchey—lovingly known as “Dee,” “Mom,” and “Gom”—passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, at the age of 91, with her daughters by her side. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dee spent most of her life in Chestnut Hill—a place that always felt like home.
She is survived by her devoted daughters and sons-in-law: Pam and Bill Roberts, Kimberly and Hunter Nickell, and Laurin and Peter Shields. She also leaves behind her beloved ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who will carry on her legacy in every shared story, beachside moment, and quiet act of kindness. Dee was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Paul E. “Buzz” Henchey, with whom she shared a life filled with love, laughter, and true partnership.
Dee found joy in life’s simple pleasures: swimming in the ocean at Martha’s Vineyard, planting flowers in her garden, chatting with her grandchildren, and exploring the world with curiosity. Her generous spirit led her to volunteer with Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA), the Philadelphia Visitors Center, and Chestnut Hill Hospital—always finding ways to help and connect.
A retired kindergarten teacher at her alma mater, Springside School, Dee’s lively spirit and gentle patience made her classroom a haven of joy and discovery for more than a decade. She brought light and laughter wherever she went, with a twinkle in her eye and a smile that made people feel instantly at ease.
An animal lover through and through, Dee adored the many dogs who shared her home and heart over the years. She lived by the motto: “Don’t hurry, don’t worry, and don’t forget to smell the flowers”—and she truly did. Above all else, she treasured time with her family, always showing up with compassion and unwavering support.
Dee Henchey’s life was a vibrant tapestry of love, laughter, strength, and compassion. She will be dearly missed, joyfully remembered, and forever celebrated by all who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be planned at a future date; the family will share details once arrangements are made.
