Helene A. Lafferty, 92 of Chestnut Hill, PA. passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 17th, 2019. Helene Sobieski was born in Bethlehem, PA. in 1927 to the late Elizabeth Sobieski and Anthony Sobieski. She attended Liberty High School and upon graduation she obtained a scholarship to Chestnut Hill Hospital School of Nursing. It was in nursing school where she met Helen Lafferty who later introduced her to her brother Bernard James Lafferty who was serving in the U.S. Navy. Upon graduating from nursing school Helene married Bernard Lafferty. Helene and Bernard lived in Chestnut Hill for 30+ years raising 5 children Debbie, Bernie, Kathy, Dale and Barry. Helene continued to work as a nurse for many years. When it came time for retirement she worked as an independent private duty nurse, and part time at the Children’s Place in Chestnut Hill. Helene was very active and loved spending time with the family and all of her grandchildren. She was an avid gardener and relished her time at the shore. She became very fond of all the animals that her 5 children would parade into the house. However, it was clear that her favorites over the years was our 125 lb. mutt Rusty and our black lab Casey. Sadly when the home in Chestnut Hill became too much for her to care for she moved to Holy Redeemer Lafayette Independent Living. This is where she spent the last three years of her life before passing on January 17, 2019, just two days after her 92 birthday. Helene is survived by her children Debbie Morinelli (Tom), Bernie, Kathy Hoffman (Bob), Barry (Jill), and the late Dale Gaasche (Ted). Also survived by 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Relatives and friends may call at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 9 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., Phila., PA 19118, Saturday, Jan. 26th at 10AM. Funeral Mass 11AM. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation in memory of Dale Gaasche www.bafound.org
