John Potter Stockton Stallings

John Potter Stockton Stallings, who everyone knew as Stocky, passed away peacefully on July 16th, 2026. He is survived by his two beloved daughters, Eliza and Maegan, and his loving wife Margaret, and predeceased by his sister Jeannie, father, John and mother, Jeanne.

Stocky attended Chestnut Hill Academy and Ohio University. He had a diverse career but got the most joy out of his years as a school bus driver for the Wissahickon School District. Despite his short stature, he was a force on the football field at CHA, and renowned for his impressive hip check on the hockey rink. His many years in the long-running Tuesday Night Softball were also legendary.

His love for, and skills at virtually any form of fishing on any body of water were his trademark. This included Beach Haven, Silver Lake, the Florida Keys, and Grand Lake Stream – anywhere a fish could (or could not) be found. The spring and fall trips to Silver Lake that he hosted for over 40 years were historic.

The ideal day for Stocky would involve a day of fishing on river, lake, or in the surf, followed by cocktails, and a big dinner with family, friends and their families, nieces, nephews and godchildren. These evenings were always rich with storytelling, music, dancing and lots of laughter. Music was often played by talented friends, with Stocky’s famous accompaniment on the spoons.

He was blessed with many cherished, lifetime friendships. He loved the Chestnut Hill community in which he grew up and his country. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 27 at 4pm at the Church of St. Martin in the Fields.
