Margery Josephine Friel

Margery “Josephine” Friel (née McHugh) passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026.

Born on October 18, 1944, Josephine was born in Mallymore, Milford, County Donegal, Ireland.

She is survived by her sisters, Benny Langley of Australia and Vera (Mike) McConellogue of Canada; her brother, Seamus (Bernie) McHugh; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Kathleen McHugh, and her sisters, Kay Logue of Milford, County Donegal, Ireland, and Carmel Murray of San Francisco, California.

At the age of 17, Josephine came to Baltimore, Maryland, USA, where she worked as a nanny for a year before finding a job she loved at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. She later worked at Blind Brook Country Club in Rye Brook, New York. After returning to the Philadelphia area, she became a caregiver and was a proud member of the Donegal Association of Philadelphia.

Josephine found renewed purpose, strength, and lasting friendships through her involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous during her later years. Her kindness, resilience, and warm spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, 10:30AM at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 9 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118. Funeral Mass 11:00AM. Interment private.
