Paula J. Romano, Ph.D, Immunologist, passed away at Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor PA on August 30 from complications Parkinson’s Disease. She resided at Maris Grove Retirement Community in Glen Mills PA since 2012. Born in Rochester New York, she received her Ph.D in Immunology from Duke University. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the Immunology Branch of the National Cancer Institute she became Director of Cellular Immunology Laboratory at The Foundation for Blood Research in Scarborough Maine. In 1981 she established the Cellular Immunology and Histocompatibility (HLA) Laboratory at Penn State College of Medicine, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center with the formation of the Kidney Transplant Program at the Medical Center and was Director of the lab until 2006. She was Director of the HLA Lab at Central Pennsylvania Transplant Associates from 2006-2012. Paula continued to work part-time from 2012-2016 with the Immunogenetics and Tissue Typing Lab at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She is survived by her devoted brothers, James J. Romano, MD of San Francisco CA and John D. Romano, Architect of Chestnut Hill. There will be a private Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 4 at 10:00 AM at Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Church, 9 E Chestnut Hill Avenue Philadelphia PA. Paula will be buried with her parents on Tuesday at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA.
