Philip Michael Gilligan, 84, of Chestnut Hill, PA, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026 at the Keystone House, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 23, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA, Philip was the son of Francis and Kathleen Gilligan. He graduated from North Catholic High School, Villanova University and Villanova Law School. For over 40 years, he practiced law in the city of Philadelphia and in both Montgomery and Delaware Counties.
Whether he was on the golf course, working in the garden, or down the shore, Philip loved being surrounded by family and friends. A legendary storyteller, he was always ready to give life advice at any moment, and his warm smile and kind heart helped anyone in need.
His favorite place to be was the Philadelphia Cricket Club, playing golf with his family and best friends. He was an avid reader, a history buff, and a true Philadelphia sports fanatic.
Philip is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Joanne Baer Gilligan, and his three children: Alison Abernethy (Matt), Andrew (Tami) and Melissa; and his eight beautiful grandchildren: Savannah, Audrey, Emery, Christian, Colin, Carly, Cami and Austin.
He is also survived by his siblings: Francis Gilligan, Saly Bellwoar and Dan Gilligan, and many other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his brother John Gilligan and sister Kate Hughes.
A funeral mass will be held at Our Mother of Consolation Church on Friday, November 20, 2026. Visitation at 10am followed by the service at 11am.
The family is deeply grateful for all of the love and support given during this difficult time.
