Stewart Mittnacht, Jr.

d. January 23, 2026

Stewart Mittnacht, Jr., 74, died at Keystone Hospice on Friday, January 23, 2026. For most of the last year of his life, Stewart enjoyed the company of Anne O’Donnell, of Chestnut Hill, after they met at an arranged dinner party. Anne became Stewart’s wife in December 2025. Previously, Stewart had married Lisa Asche Mittnacht, also of Chestnut Hill, and they had two sons, Stewart Mittnacht, III and Sanderson Craig Mittnacht (married to Stewart’s beloved daughter in law, Meaghan Marie Mittnacht). Later Stewart married a former high school sweetheart, Mary Shoemaker Mittnacht of Princeton, New Jersey. Stewart and Mary retired early to Santa Fe where they lived a fairy tale life for several years before Mary unexpectedly passed away after a brief illness. Stewart returned to Princeton where he resumed his retired life and was most happy as an active volunteer with the operatic theatre group, The Savoy Company in Philadelphia, where he served on the Board and in many other positions mainly backstage as Master Carpenter and mentor to many.

Stewart was a proud graduate of Chestnut Hill Academy (now SCH), class of 1969, Princeton University ‘74, and Duke University School of Business where he was a Fuqua Scholar. He also frequently spoke fondly of the one year he attended The Kent School in Connecticut which his father also attended. Stewart had a long career in the pharmaceutical industry, primarily in regulation compliance. In his last job with Rhone Poulenc Rorer (RPR), he traveled frequently to Paris and loved to “pull out” his French accent for a good laugh. He also loved to travel and shared many stories of interesting places. One of his favorites was the wedding he attended with Mary of her American Field Service “family” in Morocco. Stewart was also an AFS student who spent a summer living with a family in Colombia, South America. His Spanish was a little better than his French!

A life-long learner, Stewart was almost always reading. He attended classes at Princeton in his later years as an alumni. While his body was failing him, his devoted sister Barbara Mittnacht Daly comforted Stewart by reminding him that he was taking his brilliant mind with him.

Stewart was the son of Emilie Keo Jordan and Stewart Mittnacht. He had two other siblings, Ellie and Bill, who predeceased him. His maternal grandparents were Callan Edley England and Margaret Vaughan England of Little Rock, Arkansas and Philadelphia. Stewart had most of their long family history stored on his laptop…a project that seemed to take years to complete. Stewart is also survived by three beautiful grandchildren, Charlotte (5), Madison (3) and Frederick (11 months), who lovingly knew him as Pops.
