Thomas Patrick Craney
Age 61, died at Abington-Jefferson Hospital on October 20th, 2025 due to complications from bacterial pneumonia after a 7 year battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Tom was born on March 12th, 1964 at Chestnut Hill Hospital in the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to George and Teresa Craney, the youngest of their seven children. He spent the majority of his youth involved in track and field, setting a Philadelphia Catholic League record in Shot Put and Discus during his time as a multi-year All Catholic honoree at Bishop McDevitt High School. After graduation, he traveled extensively throughout his twenties and thirties, visiting five out of the seven continents. These trips varied from spending a summer in Ireland with family to visiting the pyramids in Egypt. Tom thoroughly enjoyed these years of his life. In the late 1980s while Tom was visiting Northern Ireland for an extended period of time, he experienced a cruel war which internationally is known as the Northern Ireland Conflict. While watching a Remembrance Sunday ceremony parade Tom found himself in close proximity to political activist Bernadette Devlin as a Provisional IRA time-bomb exploded in the crowd. Many were injured but Tom and Bernadette miraculously managed to survived this explosion. As lifelong golfer, Tom played and caddied at many area courses even rising to honor caddie at the elite Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.
He then met and married his wife of 27 years, Claire Craney (née Monticelli.) He is survived by Claire and their two children, Joseph and Margaret. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings: Karen Allen (Michael), Peggy Mattis (Ken), Mark Craney (Trudy), Claire Dukes (Rob, deceased), Joan Craney (Peter Iannuzzo), and George Craney (Jacki).
Family and friends are invited to attend Tom's funeral Mass 10:00 am at Saint Genevieve Catholic Church, Flourtown, PA on November 28th, 2025, preceded by visitation at 9:00am.
