Thomas M. Fasy, MD

February 16, 1942 — January 14, 2026

The gift of eternal peace and rest was given to Thomas (Tom) Michael Fasy, who passed away on Wednesday January 14, 2026. He is survived by his loving siblings, Maureen (Fasy) McElroy, Catherine Fasy, and Joseph Fasy, and his three nieces, Maureen B. McElroy, Kathleen Hennessy, and Kristin McElroy (Eddie Manzi).

Tom was born in Philadelphia on February 16, 1942, the son of the late Mary Fleming and Samuel Fasy. Tom graduated from St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia in 1959 and went on to attend St. Joseph’s College (now University) where he earned his B.S. in biology in 1963 before earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1968. He completed his residency in pathology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center where he also began working on his PhD in cell biology. While working on his PhD from Columbia, he had the opportunity to work in the laboratory of Dr. Vincent G. Allfrey of The Rockefeller University, where he learned much of the cutting edge DNA research of the day. Upon earning his PhD from Columbia University in 1976, he spent three years as a research fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Michael D. Bick of the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology in Nutley, NJ. Tom spent the majority of his career (1979 – 2011) with joint academic (professor of pathology) and hospital (attending pathologist) appointments at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine/ Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Tom loved his work and the opportunities that living in New York City offered. He loved the opera and Broadway shows. He got involved with the Catholic Worker community of Manhattan and maintained friendships through it his entire life. He was a lifelong pacifist and was actively involved with Veterans for Peace. Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, he became keenly interested in the toxic effects of depleted uranium exposure to children, and spent much time in his later years traveling to the Middle East to conduct his research. He developed deep friendships through his travels, and helped facilitate the education of many refugee students through his work with the Iraqi Student Project.

Tom loved his brother, sisters, parents, and nieces deeply. He could always be counted on to come home to Philadelphia to visit for birthdays and holidays. He will always be remembered by them and many others as a man of peace, towering intellect, and great love.

Through his Jesuit education at the Prep and the College, he learned how to be a man for and with others and stands as an example of what it means to live a life dedicated to the pursuit of peace and justice in this world.
